Writer Spotlight: Joseph Michalowski

Joseph MichalowskiIn our latest Writer Spotlight, we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Michalowski, an incredibly talented B2B tech writer. In many ways, we consider Joe to be one of our “founding writers,” as he was one of the first freelancers we hired back in our agency days. The following brief interview will teach you about the topics he likes to write about most, his views on the latest marketing trends, and more. Enjoy!

nDash: If you could only write about one topic for the rest of your freelancing life, what would it be? And why?

Joseph Michalowski: That’s a tough question because I like to make sure I have some variety in my assignments. But if I had to pick one, I think I’d write about enterprise digital transformation. I think the way we work is changing so quickly, and I love writing about how enterprises can use technology to stay on top of the smaller, up-and-coming competition that plans to displace them.

Q: What’s the most rewarding part about being a freelance writer? The most challenging?

A: There’s nothing better than completing a long blog post or a white paper about a complicated topic and hearing that the client loved it. But along that same line, the most challenging part is getting over my nerves when writing about new topics. You just have to take the time to research and prepare first.

Q: What do your most successful clients all have in common?

A: They have a strategy. It seems like the most successful clients are the ones that have a pretty good idea of what topics they’re going to cover. They just need writers for the last step to actually flesh out the main idea.

Q: What made you decide to become a freelance writer?

A: I just love writing. When someone told me I might actually be able to make a living doing it, becoming a freelance writer seemed like a no-brainer.

Q: What’s the biggest mistake you see brands making with their content?

A: Some brands seem happy to publish content just to say they’re doing content marketing. But without a really unique approach to content, it’s easy to get lost in the noise.

Q: What marketing trends should brands be keeping an eye on in 2017?

A: In general, more isn’t necessarily better. Whether you’re talking about your blog publishing schedule or your social channels, just because you publish more content doesn’t mean you’ll see more success. Brands will spend more time focusing on their content marketing efforts in 2017.
